At the moment I have the dropbox package installed and the nautilus-dropbox package is not installed -- the same configuration as on the other machine where Dropbox works properly. Synaptic was perfectly happy to install nautilus-dropbox earlier (before I did the download); the problem was that the resulting dropbox didn't work.
Since there is a perfectly usable version of Dropbox around, I would suggest the following to Dropbox:
1. Fix the published command-line procedure so that it works. Given that the download works, that ought to be possible.
2. Send a repaired version of nautilus-dropbox to Ubuntu.
But I wonder if the debi installer works some magic that can't be achieved from the command line.
