Mythtv failed to download playlist m3u

In mythtv-setup, I have added an IPTV source, which is just a m3u playlist. I have verified the playlist works just fine with
wget http://www.avenard.org/files/media/playlist-hls.m3u

I followed all of the steps exactly in this guide:
http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/User_Manual:Setting_up_HTTP_Live_Streaming_Recorder

When I get near the last step, Connect Source to Input, I hit "channel scan" and get "Download of playlist failed"

Any ideas?

Note: it works when I download the file manually and enter the url as a local file
