Bug Description

My system is Ubuntu 8.04

The error occured when updating mysql with synaptic today. The full error message was
E: /var/cache/apt/archives/mysql-server_5.0.51a-3ubuntu5.1_all.deb: subprocess pre-installation script returned error exit status 1
E: /var/cache/apt/archives/mysql-server-5.0_5.0.51a-3ubuntu5.1_i386.deb: subprocess new pre-removal script returned error exit status 1

So I tried to stop mysql server manually with
sudo /etc/init.d/mysql stop

which returned the following error message
/usr/bin/mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Access denied for user 'debian-sys-maint'@'localhost' (using password: YES)'

Seems that there is a problem wirth the "debian-sys-maint" user.

Last week I did a restore of all my mysql databases (including mysql database) with MySQL Administrator which was backuped on an other machine. So probably this is the reason for the trouble I have now.

This problems is a problem with the authentication of the debian-sys-maint user, not a bug in mysql.

Changed in mysql-dfsg-5.0:
status: New → Invalid
