Hi Gaele or anyone else affected.

I am wondering if this could be a duplicate/regression of LP: #1899248. Would you mind providing more details on the hardware and on the failure? Does it usually take a while from the moment the new mysql package setup starts to the point the installation fails?

Once you provide more information, please, set this bug status back to new so we can keep investigating this one.

- Last Friday I upgraded to Mantic. During the upgrade the problem happened again. I managed to finish the upgrade by removing mysql-server-8.0
- After the upgrade I tried to install mysql-server, resulting in the same error. The error appeared after less that a minute, though, so this does not seem to be related to #1899248
- However, today, with Ubuntu fully updated, I tried to install mysql-server again. This time the install succeeded. The install took 28 seconds.

So I'm afraid I cannot help with testing any more.

Thanks for getting back to us Gaele!

Looking at the collected info, the only error message I spot is the "Unable to shut down" error, which like Athos points out, seems similar to LP: #1899248. That bug's fix was more of a tuning than a root cause fix, so the issue can still crop up if an installation takes longer than 3 min. You mention that you saw it pop up after less than a minute, on your second installation attempt, which I agree does seem to not match the symptoms, however perhaps apport was reporting the error from the first attempt?

The mysql error log can be used to analyze what actually happened, and indeed it does indicate shutting down mysqld took >slightly< over 3 min:

2023-09-16T17:06:19.994942Z 0 [System] [MY-013172] [Server] Received SHUTDOWN from user <via user signal>. Shutting down mysqld (Version: 8.0.33-0ubuntu0.23.04.4).
2023-09-16T17:06:23.303243Z 0 [System] [MY-010910] [Server] /usr/sbin/mysqld: Shutdown complete (mysqld 8.0.33-0ubuntu0.23.04.4) (Ubuntu).

2023-09-16T17:56:25.259329Z 0 [System] [MY-013172] [Server] Received SHUTDOWN from user <via user signal>. Shutting down mysqld (Version: 8.0.34-0ubuntu0.23.04.1).
2023-09-16T18:00:12.586424Z 0 [System] [MY-010910] [Server] /usr/sbin/mysqld: Shutdown complete (mysqld 8.0.34-0ubuntu0.23.04.1) (Ubuntu).

I don't know if this matches to your attempt #1 or #2, but perhaps based on the timestamps you can determine that?

So, I think Athos may be correct this is indeed related to #1899248, and simply lies outside the tuning window. I'm not sure if that suggests an adjustment to the tuning or suppression of apport error reporting or something else; I'll flag for Lena to see if there's anything useful to glean.
