You may want to be sure that mysql is actually running before doing the upgrade. Is it failing to start?

This looks like local corruption or misconfiguration, rather than a bug in Ubuntu. You can find pointers to get help for this sort of problem here: http://www.ubuntu.com/support/community

If you believe that this is really a bug, then you may find it helpful to read "How to report bugs effectively" http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem, explain why you believe this is a bug rather than a problem specific to your system, and then change the bug status back to New.

Without steps to reproduce the problem, there is little that can be done on this bug. I'll mark this bug as Incomplete for now, pending someone else confirming that it is a bug or unless someone can provide steps to reproduce.

Where are you installing mysql from? I did not notice this last time I looked but these values in the init.d file are not correct:

insserv: warning: current start runlevel(s) (empty) of script `mysql' overrides LSB defaults (2 3 4 5).
insserv: warning: current stop runlevel(s) (0 1 2 3 4 5 6) of script `mysql' overrides LSB defaults (0 1 6).

Defaults should look like:
# Default-Start: 2 3 4 5
# Default-Stop: 0 1 6

Did you modify the file or the install in some manner? Is this a fresh install?

Mysql from ubuntu repository. I tried reinstall mysql but it does not helps.

For the sake of completeness maybe "dpkg --verify mysql-server-5.7" ?
To check for accidential changes?

But I'd expect the issue to be more around: /var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock access issue.
And that appears to me to be more of a fail-to-start server issue, and due to that the upgrade not being able to reach it.

Normally on mysql bugs there is also an error log of the mysql server which is missing here.
This should have much better info why the server failed to start.
