Upgrade from trusty to Xenial (server edition with "do-release-upgrade -d") hangs on upgrading.

There was something like (unfortunately I do not have the original text on my screen anymore..)

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better.

Please could you check if /etc/mysql/my.cnf.migrated exists, and if so please attach it? Also, please paste the output of "update-alternatives --display my.cnf". Once you have done both of these, please change the bug status back to New. Thanks!

my.cnf has the removed options from 5.5, which I guess is what breaks it, and it's trying to install 5.7.12-0ubuntu1, which doesn't have the fix for that issue. There's no error log attached, so I can't verify 100%, but I'm fairly sure.
