Bug Description

Release: Ubuntu 15.10

Background:
I installed MariaDB and migrated from MySQL. Later I found that some programs did not work correctly. Therefore I completely removed MariaDB and tried to reinstall MySQL.

Re-Installation:
It is not possible to re-install or launch mysql-5.6 AND mysql-server. I have tried to completely remove and reinstall but it does not work. Below are some error messages I get. I have managed to unmask the MySQL service so this error does not exist any more however I am not able to install or launch mysql-5.6 AND mysql-server.
" dpkg: error processing package mysql-server (--configure):
 dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
Error in function:
Setting up mysql-server-5.6 (5.6.24-0ubuntu2) ...
invoke-rc.d: Unit mysql.service is masked
update-alternatives: error: alternative path /etc/mysql/mysql.cnf doesn't exist
dpkg: error processing package mysql-server-5.6 (--configure):
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 2
dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of mysql-server:
 mysql-server depends on mysql-server-5.6; however:
Package mysql-server-5.6 is not configured yet."

I think there are many others suffering from this bug. A thread on Ubuntu forums on this topic can be found here.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better.

Since it seems likely to me that this is a local configuration problem, rather than a bug in Ubuntu, I'm marking this bug as Incomplete.

If indeed this is a local configuration problem, you can find pointers to get help for this sort of problem here: http://www.ubuntu.com/support/community

Or if you believe that this is really a bug, then you may find it helpful to read "How to report bugs effectively" http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem, explain why you believe this is a bug in Ubuntu rather than a problem specific to your system, and then change the bug status back to New.

Changed in mysql-5.6 (Ubuntu):
status: New → Incomplete
