I suggest everybody to try this possible workaround, at least until the bug gets fixed.

    POSSIBLE WORKAROUND:
Downgrade the packages that you've updated. If you don't remember their names, these are the main ones: mysql-server-5.5 - zentyal-core - mysql-server - mysql-client-5.5

    HOW TO DOWNGRADE THE PACKAGES:
- Follow this very clear tutorial: http://askubuntu.com/questions/292314/how-to-downgrade-packages-on-ubuntu

Leave your feedback!

Reinstalling mysql-server as suggested here (http://askubuntu.com/questions/125686/mysql-fails-to-start-after-upgrade-installation-etc) seems worked for me, on Ubuntu 13.10

I had the same problem with the same package but with ubuntu 12.04.4 LTS :
MySQLConf.etc.mysql.my.cnf: Error: [Errno 2] File o directory non esistente: '/etc/mysql/my.cnf'
After restoring this file, it was possible to continue successfully the installation with
 sudo dpkg --configure mysql-server-5.5
Note that I had an old version of my.cnf stored in /etc/mysql.old/my.cnf and the restoration was realized simply by
sudo cp /etc/mysql.old/my.cnf /etc/mysql/

Thank you for reporting this bug to Ubuntu. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all reported bugs in a timely manner.

This bug is for a old release and as a packaging bug it will not affect a newer release in the same way.

Changed in mysql-5.5 (Ubuntu):
