package mysql-server-5.5 5.5.28-0ubuntu0.12.04.2 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1. rivendell attempted mysql root login corrupts password permanently and reinstalling does not permit reset.

mysql root password becomes corrupt when rivendell attempts a mysql root login from a remote client. mysql root password resets using mysqld_safe do not work. uninstalling and re-installing do not work and result in this error. attempts to cleanse the system of all mysql files have not worked so far.
