Bug Description

Mutter should place windows in the center of the screen by default, but it doesn't (now way to set).

In compiz this is done by "place windows" plugin, but no such luck in mutter.

Can "place windows" be added to mutter, too?

no, by default mutter stacks windows by slightly offsetting each new window. Also window placement in General can be a little messy since it's sometimes handled by the app and the rest of the time WM

compiz plugins won't work in mutter, it is possible to write mutter plugins but there are not many around. The only one I know if shellscape.

If applications using Mutter specify a placement, that's fine. The primary goal bug report is to atleast have some apps be placed in the center, since it is a very popular feature in compiz. Albeit that compiz code is not directly useable out of its context.

Surely it's possible for a future plugin/or_patch to give the window manager some sort of OVERRIDE capability, for those that apps that have their own placement specification.

"slightly offsetting each new window."

is not an issue, since MOSTLY-CENTER would be good enough, compared to always at the top-left, which is dizzying.

Proposed patch, based great similarities between Gala and Mutter and mutter-common.
