Bug Description

Binary package hint: quodlibet

I like quodlibet, it is simple, elegant and powerful, but my family using Windows hates it.

We share our music on a network drive. After a week of a number of sessions to re-organise our music files and after extensive editing the tags, the following problem has been detected.

On Ubuntu I can play all wma files (variable bit rate) both with Rythmbox and Quodlibet.

On windows a large number of files that I have updated cannot be played any more not with WMP11, WMP9 or WINAMP 5.6. dependent on the file and player, they do not show up at all in the media library or show up as expected and updated, but refuse to play. Which is also true after a clean install of WMP or WINAMP.

Note that Quodlibet for Windows can play all wma files too, like its Linux version. Note also that all other users only have read access to the music. Sometimes a whole album is corrupted and sometimes only a part of it. I live in the Dominican Republic so I have 1-3 power breaks per day, but I do not expect it to cause the problem, since it could mean loosing an update or set of updates, but I do not see how that could corrupt e.g. a whole album in the way as described.

I will attach a corrupted file. If needed I have other examples and even the back-ups from before they were corrupted. I use Ubuntu 10.10 daily updated and Quodlibet 2.2.1-1.

Quod Libet uses mutagen for editing/saving tags. I've opened a bug report there: http://code.google.com/p/mutagen/issues/detail?id=81

As Joe pointed out in the bug report, this is probably fixed in the latest mutagen release.

Update the python-mutagen package using the QL stable PPA https://launchpad.net/~lazka/+archive/ppa
or install the package directly: https://launchpad.net/~lazka/+archive/ppa/+files/python-mutagen_1.20-0~ppa2~maverick_all.deb

In QL enable the "force write" plugin. Switch to the "Search Library" view, search for

~format="Windows Media Audio"

select all songs and right click -> Plugins -> Force Write.

If you have any further questions, ask away.

Dear Christoph

Your procedure did not solve the problem. So it is probably another bug.
I attach the original file from 2010 and the one after the force
rewrite. If needed I can send more examples.

Best Regards

Bert
