Bug Description

Binary package hint: mplayer

After yesterday's update from 0.99+1.0pre8-0ubuntu8 to 1.0~rc1-0ubuntu3, playing video files gives me garbage audio output, independ from audio output plugin (-ao). You can hear the music, but it's distorted and weird.

Couldn't find the previous feisty version online. Going back to edgy's mplayer package fixes it.

Same problem here, I'm running 1.0~rc1-0ubuntu3 with Feisty up-to-date.

I get an error when I'm trying to watch a video:

Trying to force audio codec driver family libmad...
Requested audio codec family [mad] (afm=libmad) not available.
  Enable it at compilation.

I just get noise out of the speakers.

It was working fine with the 0.99+1.0pre8-0ubuntu8 version.

Maybe something is missing in the package?

As a hint, compiling the current tarball from mplayerhq, you get a package with exactly the same problem. (method: sudo apt-get build-dep mplayer; fakeroot debian/binary)

So most likely the devil is in the libaries (maybe libmad).

The problem seems to be that mp3lib does strange things on some systems. The message about libmad is harmless: libmad isn't enabled in the Ubuntu builds.
