player won't play bbc radio listen again programmes

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

This problem only applies to BBC iplayer radio "listen again" programmes, for a user outside the uk. The player opens up but after a minute or so a message states that the content does not seem to be working -- try again later. Attempting to open stream in terminal produces following result:

  It can be a bug in the MPlayer code _or_ in your drivers _or_ in your

This really doesn't look like gnome-terminal, probably mplayer or one of the codecs.

Sorry, this doesn't mean anything to me. I'm just following the
instructions for reporting a bug. I don't even know if you want a reply to
your email or not.

 The message in terminal said :" It can be a bug in the MPlayer code _or_ in
your drivers _or_ in your
 gcc version."

I don't know what a gcc version is either. The message also gave a link for
reporting a bug in mplayer, but it was a link to a document that does not
exist.

I've spent three weeks trying to sort this problem out. I've had several
people on the forums advising me, but got nowhere. I have no idea what to
do about it. I'm going to wait for 10.04 to come out and then do a fresh
install. Maybe that will fix it.

Hi -- I just saw your reported bug about mplayer and I tried opening the url in a terminal as you specified:

$ mplayer rtsp://rmv8.bbc.net.uk:554/radio4fmcoyopa/radio_4_fm_-_tuesday_1656.ra

and it works on my machine. (Funny -- I was looking at bugs like yours because mplayer crashes on this machine when I click the icon. But now I believe I know why.)

There are other packages that are installed at the same time as mplayer that could have caused the crash. I would suggest you might try reinstalling mplayer and/or make sure it has what it needs to decode RealAudio streams.

I briefly had the Medibuntu repository on this system and it could be that an updated package came from there. You might have a look at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu and see if you want to try using it.

(By the way, the earlier comments about your bug report were because you accidentally collected data for the terminal program itself and not the mplayer program. If you open mplayer and use System Monitor you can find the process ID of mplayer while it is running. Then you can use apport-bug <ID> to collect the data from mplayer. Some Ubuntu-supported apps include a "Report a Problem" item in the Help menu that does the collection in one step, but neither mplayer nor gnome-mplayer does.)

I just realized something else regarding your bug report -- when you were using the GUI (Graphical User Interface) version of the player, were you using mplayer, gnome-mplayer, or Totem Movie Player (or maybe something else)? On my system I find the graphical gnome-mplayer starts fine but takes much longer to buffer the stream than the non-graphical CLI version in the terminal.

Thank you for the response Tommy. Actually, this wasn't the only problem I
had after upgrading to Karmic. Firefox kept crashing. I reported this bug
and got a message asking me to report it using apport. When I did that I
got an error message telling me to upgrade tzdata. When I did that I fried
my hard drive. Currently the affected pc won't boot up. I'm going to have
to use the Karmic disc to attempt to retrieve my files. I have another
desktop running Karmic which is also buggy. Ultimately, I think my solution
to the problem is to do a fresh install of 10.04 from a disc, butn in the
meantime I'm travelling for 6 months, so I won't be doing anything until
June. Karmic was not a success from my point of view.
