Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-mplayer

When I start gmplayer I get an error message saying
Error opening/initializing the selected video_out (-vo) device.
then I get no video at all. The playback starts, though, because I can hear the audio.

Strangely, if I start mplayer instead, there is no problem at all.

The video card is a Nvidia GeForce Go 7300 TurboCache.

@Cesare Tirabassi: sorry, I thought gmplayer was provided by gnome-mplayer but I was mistaken.

Hi Dierre
I think this is due to your video out setting of gmplayer being set to xmga.

Launch gmplayer (type gmplayer in a terminal), and right-click the main window, choosing Preferences. In the video tab, note that the top option is highlighted (xmga). This doesn't work with all systems.

Try changing it to 'gl' or 'gl2', clicking 'OK' and try playing your video again. You might need to close gmplayer, then reopen it, for the change to take effect

I get the same error message as you if I leave it set as xmga

Hope this helps :)

does 'gmplayer -v xv' avoid this issue?

A better explanation of this issue can be found in #537740.

basically the probing for xv modules is broken in gmplayer, but works in mplayer

w1zard: yes, setting it to "gl2" solves the issue, thanks!
