Bug Description
Binary package hint: mplayer
Trying to set up MPlayer to display ASS subtitles, I found that it uses a compiled-in version of libass instead of the installed shared library. Why is that? The separate libass package can be kept up to date more easily, as well as shared with other programs of course. Please fix this shortcoming.
Karmic has these versions:
MPlayer 2:1.0~rc3+
libass 0.9.6-1
Newer packages found in PPAs:
MPlayer svn20090831r29604
libass 0.9.7-0ubuntu1~ppa0
I've no idea which versions of libass the MPlayer packages have built into them, which is quite annoying when I want it to use the most recent version for the best ASS subtitle support.

does this ever occur in trusty or later?
If so, can you please be more specific how to verify the problem?
