mplayer crashes everything when avi is played after mkv

Bug Description
Actually this bug is universal: if in any given media player I play an mkv file, and then play an avi file sometime after, everything crashes, i.e., it's as if I had pushed Ctrl Alt Bkspc. I am unsure of any other details. AVI files play normally until I play an mkv file. Also, the same thing happens if I try to open a media file with a firefox plugin.
Ubuntu 8.10 is the distribution being used.

I'm not sure if my problem is related or not.
My system crashes when I spin the desktop, and just now when I tried to use mplayer queueing vids...
Requires total power down in order to reboot. Soft boot results in hung system (after login).
