Bug Description

Binary package hint: mplayer

I occassionally get a total system freeze (i.e. hard reboot required) when watching video. E.g. watching movies embedded in websites (e.g. discgolftv.com) and watching movies in Totem movie player.

I get very frequent system freezes when watching video via my Hauppauge TV tuner card and the MPlayer movie player. Following instructions from linuxtv.org, I use tzap to tune a dvb-t station and then launch "mplayer /dev/dvb/adapter0/dvr0". Generally lasts between 5 secs and 5 minutes before a freeze occurs.

It is only watching video that a freeze will occur. I never have had a freeze in any other scenario.

Currently running with the NV driver. I have tried restricted drivers however the same result applies.

Looking at other system freeze cases, I tried disabling /etc/init.d/powernowd but it did not solve the issue.

ASUS A7V266-E motherboard.
NVidia GeForce 7600GS AGP graphics card.
Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-1300 TV tuner.
mplayer media player.

Not sure what information is required so I have taken a stab. If there is anything that needs to be collected please just let me know.

Same issue occurs when I put in my old TNT2 card. Could this be an issue with the VIA chipset?

i have a similar or the same bug.

I watch tv on two different computers. Same problem on both.
One tv has a pinnacle pctv, a nvidia graphic card and runs kdetv as a player.
The other has a wintv usb tv card, a intel graphic card and runs xawtv.

But have the same problem, when watching tv, there are random total freezes of the system, after a random amount of time.
On the pinnacle pctv computer they happen every few hours. On the wintv one they happend 3 times in 1 and a half hour.

There is no logfile that indicates a problem. The keyboard simplay starts to blink and the computer does not react anymore. The sound continues to play

i would like to add that this bug has nothing todo with mplayer (since i'm not using it) and it only arised since i'm using kubuntu 7.10. it was not here when using 7.04.
Should i open a new bug or could it be the same. It looks to me like it is the same. which would mean it is not the fault of the tv player application but a kernel bug.

i think we can confirm this bug, and probably it has to do something with the kernel. And as it seems not even with the tv card driver itself, but with v4l, since different card models (usb, non usb, and different chipssets), different players (kdetv, mplayer, xawtv..) are involved.
Could somebody change the description to kernel bug? i hope somebody of the kernel team will read it! it's a serious issue.

additional info:
Both computer that i know of that have that problem, are also using analog tv cards.
