Bug Description

Binary package hint: mozplugger

When using Evince in conjunction with mozplugger to view pdf documents on Firefox, Evince can only open one instance of the same pdf document. The second instance will not load but only a blank browser page will be shown instead.

The following steps assume that /etc/mozpluggerrc contain the following line:

repeat noisy swallow(evince) fill: evince "$file"

under "text/x-pdf: pdf: PDF file" in order to load pdf documents with evince.

Steps to reproduce:

1.- Open a web browser, i.e. Epiphany or Firefox.

2.- For test purposes, enter the following search string on google (without quotes): 'test filetype:pdf' and start a search. That should bring up some pdf document results that can be used for testing.

3.- Open the first link on a tab or new window. Evince loads the pdf document within the window or tab as expected. Leave the window or tab open.

4.- Open the same link on a new window or tab. The pdf document is not open as expected. Instead, a blank (grey) page is shown on the browser.

5.- Optionally, click on the second link returned by google as a result, in order to open another pdf document. The document is open as expected.

6.- Optionally, close the browser windows or tabs opened in steps 4 and 5. Repeat step 3. Evince loads the pdf document within the window or tab as expected.

Thanks.

I have some strange comportements with evince in firefox since my last migration from feisty to gutsy.

Most of the time, I have a gray window with the evince menu bar and a "Loading..." message.
If the tab lose the focus, the menu bar and the message disapear and I have only a gray window even after waiting a long time (I can compare with a "evince <url>" from a command console, which load ans display the pdf normally and fastly).

Sometimes, if I close all the tabs excepts the one with the pdf, evince display it.

I can confirm this on hardy.

I can confirm this on hardy as well, with a clean installation of mozplugger (i.e., with all mozpluggerrc and pluginreg.dat files deleted). My computer is updated from hardy-proposed.

I found the following bug on the mozplugger bugzilla, that seems relevant:
https://www.mozdev.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=17775
It's marked RESOLVED-FIXED as of version 1.10.0.

So I had some more time to investigate, and in fact I think this is an evince bug.

It is possible to open more than one file when using other PDF readers (acroread, xpdf, epdfview).

Also, other plugins are able to open several documents in different tabs at once (tested with DJVU files using djview4 and ODT docs using mozilla-openoffice.org).

Evince seems to do something different with window management. Maybe the following evince bug applies?

I have the same problem as this, only a single tab containing a pdf will load correctly, loading a second tab frequently just produces a gray featureless window with 'done' in the bottom right corner of the firefox browser window. The second pdf can be viewed eventually by pressing refresh lots, but often not with the correct sizing - the scroll bar sometimes extends off the bottom of the window where I cannot follow it - in achieving this the viewing of the first pdf is usually impaired if the second tab is closed, it will leave a tabless single window of gray fill.

System: Ubuntu Hardy 64bit, using firefox 3, nvidia graphics card and restricted drivers installed. Using Mozplugger to embed evince in firefox.

I can't confirm this symptom in 9.04. Please set the status to:
1) New if reproducible in a supported or development Ubuntu version, or
2) Invalid if you cannot reproduce it in a supported or development Ubuntu version.

Changed in mozplugger:
importance: Medium → Low
status: New → Incomplete

Even though this report is closed, I should add that I get the same problem. Also, if one instance of Evince is open, a pdf will not embed in the Firefox window, though it will open in its own (non-embedded) Evince instance. This is in Jaunty.

To reproduce it, open an instance of Evince either in the browser or not. Then try to open another instance embedded in the browser. It shouldn't embed.

clearly an evince (2.28.1) problem: it can't open 2 times the same pdf, already locally on mmy computer (amd64, xubuntu 9.10).
