Bug Description

Binary package hint: mozilla-thunderbird

I am on Ubuntu 6.06 LTS (Dapper). Linux localhost 2.6.15-28-686 #1 SMP PREEMPT Thu Feb 1 16:14:07 UTC 2007 i686 GNU/Linux. Gnome.

I updated my system on 2 March 2007 to thunderbird 1.5.0.9 (20070104). I also updated to the latest of all the available packages.

I connect to my IMAP folder, and try to forward emails from a folder of my inbox, i.e. Inbox.temp folder.

I can open the email fine.
If I try to forward it, my CPU maxes out, and thunderbird hangs.
This happens when I forward the email directly without opening it, also.
This also happens when I start thunderbird in safe mode (mozilla-thunderbird -safe-mode)
I have to kill thunderbird in order to get my system back.

This was not a problem at all until the last upgrade.

--- Possible test case to test:
create a very large text file, for example a backup of a mysql database (sql, plain text). I was able to replicate this with less than 100K records in a csv file.
Attach it to a email and send it to yourself.
open it. try to reply or forward.
your cpu should max out for several minutes trying to process the message.

I have upgraded to Ubuntu 6.10 - the Edgy Eft, and I have deleted the emails in question by accident, but here are some more details.

The messages were plain text. They were very large messages, coming from CVS commits. I imagine the messages were dozens of pages long.

I hope that helps.

Is this still an issue for you? We are trying to sort this issue and would like to know if this still happens.

Thanks in advance.

I have narrowed it down and believe I know what is causing it.

TB is not hanging permanently, but it will take several minutes to recover. Here's how you can re-create the issue:

Attach it to a email and send it to yourself.
open it. try to reply or forward.

Assuming that the processing/display of the message is causing this, a quick fix for this could be:

- treat both SQL and CSV files as actual attachments, and do not try to show them in-line in messages.
- add other types of files that could be extremely large

I can't attach any of our data for this bug because of company restrictions, so I apologize for that.

Hello again.
I am experiencing this all the time now. The difference is that I am dealing with large .csv files all the time.

This could be fixed by having thunderbird *not* display .csv and .sql attachments inline in messages, and just treat them as an attachment.

thanks,
-Frank

I don't use IMAP, but my Thunderbird often "freezes" when I receive a multi-meg .CSV or .SQL file. Thunderbird shouldn't try to render attachment inline if they're larger then N bytes (for some reasonable N value)

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. My apologies as I should not have marked this Invalid. The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Maverick Meerkat. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.

Hello Frank,
Thank you for submitting this bug and reporting a problem with Thunderbird. You made this bug report in 2007 and there have been several versions of Ubuntu and Thunderbird since then.

Could you confirm that this is no longer a problem and that we can close the ticket?
If it is still a problem, are you still interested in finding a solution to this bug?
If you are, could you let us know and, in the current version, could you run the following (only once):
apport-collect 89894
and upload the updated logs and and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.

Thank you again for helping make Ubuntu and Thunderbird better.
