Bug Description

Binary package hint: mozilla-firefox

After installing Google Desktop for Linux, Firefox crashes multiple times an hour. Usually while opening a new page, sometimes out of the blue.

The problem seems to be fixed if I disable the extension "Google Desktop for Linux" (1.0.1 version).

This is also a Firefox bug since I don't expect an extension to bring down the whole browser (without at least some warning).

Details:
google-desktop-linux 1.0.1.0060
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.0.12) Gecko/20070601 Ubuntu/dapper-security Firefox/1.5.0.12
Ubuntu 6.06
Linux 2.6.15-28-386 #1 PREEMPT

The crash/ or close unexpectedly is not caused by firefox but caused by google-desktop and we can not support google desktop. Please file a bug with them.

Changed in mozilla-firefox:
status: New → Invalid

So it's perfectly fine for Firefox to crash due to an extension ?

No log message, no warning, no automatic disable of the bad extension or some other more intelligent approach ?

Firefox nor any otehr ubuntu official package caused this crash. Please report bug to google as thier product is causing the crash they support thier own products.
Ubuntu cant support every application someone makes, When it is included in Ubuntu if ever than we can support it. A plugin/extension written poorly from a 3rd party person we can not help you we would be supporting anything and everything.

google-desktop is not a firefox add on nor extension nor a plugin it is a Desktop application it has no relationship with firefox at all

I'm not trying to argue with you. This is a Google-bug, sure! But, the fact that a Firefox extension (yes, the app comes with an extension and this is the cause of the crash) can bring down the whole Firefox browser doesn't look so good.

This is like saying that an user-space application can corrupt the kernel. I was expecting some sandbox-ing for the extension or at least some crashlog so that I can detect the extension with a defect without trial and error.

Emilian, actually I can't reproduce it on Ubunut 6.06 with Google Desktop.

Can you describe more about your env? like X11 version, KDE/GNome version, gcc/glibc/libstdc++ version

-R

I use a fresh feisty (updated)
gdl installs a firefox extension automatically which can't be uninstalled unless you uninstall gdl.
I fixed the problem deactivating the firefox extension, however I lose gdl integration with firefox (which means I lose gdl)
