upgrading from 8.04 to 8.10.
Expected upgrade script to finish "installing the upgrades" portion of upgrade script, and proceed to "Cleaning up" and "Restarting the computer"
Error occurred toward end of "installing the upgrades" portion of upgrade script. Dialog box appears asking to report bug, then information box appears with,

"Could not install the upgrades

The upgrade aborts now. Your system could be in an unusable state. A recovery will run now (dpkg --configure -a)."
