Bug Description

Binary package hint: module-init-tools

Hi, there is a broken wlan driver, causing a kernel-oops and system freeze in the ubuntu-sources (bug #78255). This driver is abandoned and experimental.

This bug is a boot-stopper for ppl like me having this wlan chipset onboard. there is no BIOS option for disabling the wlan chipset and there is no way to prevent feisty from loading this driver.

I suggest to add the kernel module "r8187" to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist as soon as possible.

People could still try to modprobe new versions of the driver, but you should really stop this driver from autoloading.

I would be happy if I could finally boot/install feisty/herd5 normally :)

uhm... you blacklisted the modules

blacklist rtl818x
blacklist rtl8187

but the modules are named differently, it should read

blacklist r818x
blacklist r8187

I'm changing status to "Invalid" for the linux-source-2.6.20 package this bug is reported against. The reason is that this report focused more on getting the module blacklisted which Kyle took care of. The issue of the broken driver is actually reported at bug #78255. Thanks.
