Bug Description
Karmic removed the madwifi driver, and now ships only the ath5k and ath9k drivers for Atheros chipsets. However, users who used Jockey to select the madwifi driver on Jaunty will still have ath5k listed as blacklisted in /etc/modprobe.

I have the exact same card and symptoms. I did a do-release-upgrade to the Karmic beta last night, and it is not detecting my AR5212 chipset wireless card.

+1 "Me too"
"update-manager -d" from Jaunty. Same chip, same results.
I'd like to point out that the chip is detected, but something is definitely not working properly.
Consider this output:
$ iwconfig

Is this still an issue for anyone with the final Karmic 9.10 release? If so, can you run the following after attempting to enable/use wifi:

Disregard my contributions to this bug. I turns out my Thinkpad has a little on/off switch for the bluetooth and wifi radios and Karmic is the first ever Linux distribution that actually pays attention to it.

I am the original submitter of this bug. How is it that it takes 2 months to confirm a problem (and a pretty big one IMO). Ubuntu 9.10 has being bad mouthed by a lot of users, and this is the reason why. On top of it all, it turns out this isnt even a bug, the driver was just blacklisted and its just a quick 2 second fix by a developer.
Makes me wonder whether my contributions as a beta tester really mean anything.

I downloaded the nightly build (Sept 14th, 2009) and created a fresh bootable usb image. The chip is now being detected correctly and working fine.
This suggests there is some problem with the upgrade routine from Jaunty.
