Bug Description

Huawei E153 USB modem don't work in Ubuntu 12.04 alpha 2 32-bit in live mode

Hello everyone.

On my computer I have (among others) installed Kubuntu 11.10 64-bit operating system. I use mobile broadband internet with Huawei E153 USB modem, and it is the only Internet connection available to me. I started Ubuntu 12.04 alpha 2 32-bit in live mode, because I am not currently able to install it on my computer. I tried to make a new connection using a Huawei E153 USB modem. As soon as I saw that the system did not recognize the modem in the process of making connections I knew something was wrong. I ignored this assumption and make a new connection, where the device was chosen for any device. After that, the new connections made was not recognized by the system. I released a USB modem from the USB port, and then re-inserted, but the connection was not recognized again. I really did not expect this problem. The aforementioned modem work "out of box" in Ubuntu 10.10, 11.04, 11.10 live mode, and expect that such a practice and be published in Ubuntu 12.04 live mode.

Some outputs from Terminal>

Kubuntu 11.10 64-bit (standard installed to my computer):

http://paste.ubuntu.com/836710/ ($ lsusb)

Ubuntu 12.04 LTS alpha 2 32-bit live mode:

http://paste.ubuntu.com/836712/ ($ lsusb)

http://paste.ubuntu.com/836714/ ($ sudo killall -9 modem-manager & $ sudo modem-manager --debug)

http://paste.ubuntu.com/836716/ ($ sudo service network-manager stop & $ sudo killall -9 modem-manager & $ sudo modem-manager --debug)

http://paste.ubuntu.com/836717/ ($ cat /lib/udev/rules.d/77-mm-usb-device-blacklist.rules)

I ask you for help. Thank you in advance.

Sorry if I made a spelling mistake somewhere, because I still have not learned the English language properly.

I'm pretty sure this is just a side-effect of bug 868034. Marking as a duplicate, we'll fix that shortly.

I still have same problem. So, I first download modemmanager_0.5.1.97-0ubuntu1_i386.deb, and then I put it to usb flash memory. After that I started Ubuntu 12.04 LTS alpha 2 32-bit in live mode, and then install it.

Make sure you first stop NetowrkManager and ModemManager completely (including killing them if necessary) then start modemmanager, then start network-manager. With this done, plug in your device, and give it enough time to be detected. It should show in the nm-applet menu.

If it doesn't, please provide full logs from /var/log/syslog.

I think usb-modeswitch was broken in the image you got, it would be useful to test using a more recent LiveCD of the current development release.
