Slow and stuttering playback in melt and mlt

Bug Description
When using Openshot (which uses mlt), any playback of any sort is slow with audio stuttering. This occures on every video and audio file that I have (mp3, mp2, wav, raw, acc, mp4, avi, ogg, etc, etc, etc).
Using melt produces the same exact problem.
Totem, ffplay, etc, do not have this problem.
Ubuntu 9.04.

I confirm the bad performance using a Pentium T4400 @ 2,2GHz. On a faster Core2Duo cpu it's not so evident, and usually just stutters when transitioning from one clip to another.
