This is a critical bug, but possibly also not valid.

The offending version of protobuf is not released. It's still in proposed:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/protobuf

So I guess this should just serve as a reminder to rebuild users of protobuf before v3 hits yakkety.

See bug #1619616 - a mir test was failing against new protobuf, so couldn't be rebuilt.

It appears this bug is still confined to 'proposed' so if you want to avoid it please just use plain 16.10 without 'proposed' enabled.
