Bug Description

Oneiric, Unity 2d

When compositing effects are enabled in metacity, icons dragged around the desktop leave a trail of shadows (i.e., the icon's shadow is not correctly erased at the last position but stays on the desktop), until the icon is dropped.

The latest news is that it's still present. I'm sorry I can't provide a screenshot, I'll try and make a photograph.

A screenshot can be seen in Bug #1015268 (thanks to Jochen Fahrner).

This "effect" can be turned off. Open gconf-editor then go to apps > metacity > general > then untick compositor_effects.
Then it goes away.

Keith, that is no workaround!!!
This way you loose transparency, shadows and all those things!

That's two releases of Ubuntu that did not even try to address this ugly problem. It leaves a bad impression on users, especially those coming here from "alternative" OSes, (where they got used to have graphics "just work").

When dragging operation is started, an a black box is drawn around the icon and leaves a trail behind it. I could only capture the black box but not the trail with gnome-screenshot. Also it leaves artifacts with tooltips. Windows with shadows are not effected however.
