Bug Description

Some applications like firefox, thunderbird, gaim (chat window) crash when minimising them all the way over to the left window border. This causes the applications to close.

gdb says this:
The program 'gaim' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'.
  (Details: serial 64032 error_code 11 request_code 53 minor_code 0)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
   that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
   To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
   option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
   backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

Sebastien, I do not think that this is a duplicate.

bug #36497 has been fixed on the 28th of March, this bug still exists although the updated metacity package is installed. Furthermore metacity does not crash using the procedure mentioned above.

Please change the status if I am correct.

metacity Version: 1:2.14.1-0ubuntu3

undupping, the fact that you bugged the window manager was confusing. It doesn't crash and the backtrace has nothing to do with it...

sebbot was lazy and didn't upstream the bug before taking off, so I'll attach the patch here. The patch fixes the problem for me (I was testing with firefox). Could you test and verify that it works for you?

Wahoo! I figured out how to upstream it for ya, seb128. It looks like this bug correctly shows it as upstream #336651 that I filed. :-)
