In my caee the crash occurred after I had added a bunch of new themes (manually untarred into ~/.themes). I then opened gnome-appearance-properties, scrolled through some themes and it crashed.

Yeah that's exactly what happened to me too. I feel your pain! :)

And it did it again. I hope this is fixed before Hardy's final release...

I'm not positive this is a kernel related bug. Can someone please attach your dmesg output after you experience a crash? Thanks.

Looks like a Metacity problem to me, not a kernel problem.

bug #204882 has interested comments saying that "<title color="shade/"#FFFFFF"/0.35" x="(width - title_width) / 2" y="(height - title_height) / 2"/>" in a theme triggers the crash

Thomas Thurman (marnanel) wrote :

I am attempting to reproduce the problem. I haven't looked at the stack traces yet.

Bug #204882 is interesting because the two pieces of theme code given (it would have been useful to have an entire theme attached for problems involving theme formats!) are both clearly broken: one contains unquoted text in an XML attribute, and the other contains a seven-digit hex triple. Presumably, then, our problem is something to do with dealing with invalid themes. However, introducing these to a Metacity theme at my end produces an error but no crash, which is correct behaviour.

If someone could attach a theme which causes a crash, other than the ones given in #204882, I would be grateful. Meanwhile I'll start reading the stack traces.

Thomas Thurman (marnanel) wrote :

Wait, no need. The stack traces have shed abundant light on the matter.

Thomas Thurman (marnanel) wrote :

I believe I've found the problem, though since I can't reproduce the crash I can't say for sure. There is a pretty glaring bug in the exact place the stack trace shows, though. Can anyone confirm?

(Please excuse me if I have messed this up: yesterday was the first day I tried doing this in Ubuntu.)

Thanks a lot Thomas for the patch! A new metacity with the fix is uploaded.

I'm closing the kernel task, its very unlikely that its releated to the kernel.

I am attaching a screenshot of 1 annoying error where in customize window no thumbnails are showing, but only of the wallpapers and the cursors, no one of the themes, controls, windows borders and the icon themes thumbnails are visible. it is not something to-die-for, but please understan me that it is so annoying ;) let it be fixed soon, coz i have it 1 and a half month allready :)
