By entering

$ gconftool-2 --type bool --set /apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager true

you *activate* metacity's abilities to work as compositing manager. By

$ gconftool-2 --type bool --set /apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager false

you disable this feature again. After you disabled this feature. Compiz should start again.
