Bug Description

I have found that on the first opening of firefox from a session without firefox running, if it starts up and is already maximized (as per when it was last closed), double clicking on the titlebar makes it restore to a window that is the size of the whole screen and has to be dragged smaller. If done with the buttons on the titlebar it works just fine. after a couple of maximizations and restores, however, the doubleclick of the title bar works as well. but the first time it starts up maximized, doubleclicking the titlebar makes the restored state the whole screen large.

Same here:

After double-clicking the title bar when firefox is maximized, it shinks back to the previous window size for the blink of an eye, but then resizes itself to the maximum size (but the window is not maximized), so I have to make it smaller every time.

Ciao

yes this is exactly the same problem I have had. I do know that it
isn't an Ubuntu-specific problem, however, because I have had it on
every version of Linux that I use. It may be a gnome-specific or a
Metacity-specific problem, but I don't know because I always use
gnome.

Same here, it is not only with firefox but with every application

yeah, I've noticed it happens both in KDE and gnome becuase i recently made
the switch. It doesn't happen very much but I have noticed that it happens
only when there is some kind of focus switching between a dialog box and the
window. And yes, it doesn't just happen to firefox, I've seen it in a
couple of other applications too.

While it's been a while since some discussion has occurred, this problem is still occurring on my system and affecting me. If there is a supposed duplicate, I can't find it. Problem is exactly how it is stated in the description...and it drives me nuts!

3.0.7-still happening. I think what's happening is Firefox insists on opening in a "almost full screen", albeit unmaximized. Then, when I double click the title bar it chooses to actually maximize...and probably vice versa.

Safe mode caused Firefox to open in a half-screen vertical frame, which could then be double clicked to go maximized.

Therefore, I believe this problem is still apparent. I'll try to open upstream, but I don't really know how to do that.

This is most probably not a firefox bug, since many other applications have the same problem (gimp, opera, ...). Or it is a bug in *all* of these applications (for example, they don't correctly store their non-maximized size). But since you say that firefox flickers to its original size shortly, that is probably not the case.

This is also not restricted to GNOME/metacity, as I am using xfce4 (Xubuntu 8.10) and I am having this problem. The difference, however, is that for me it doesn't matter whether I double-click the title bar or use the un-maximize button - the window always stays at maximum size (and it does not flicker).

I'm therefore opening this for both metacity and xfwm4

Related to bug #310752 (but not identical). The other bug describes a problem where launching an application activates the "Maximized" icon, although the window is not maximized. Closing and re-opening such an application will maximize it "correctly" (although that is not desired).

Thanks for reporting this bug and any supporting documentation. Since this bug has enough information provided for a developer to begin work, I'm going to mark the xfwm4 task as confirmed and let them handle it from here. Thanks for taking the time to make Ubuntu better!

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Lucid Lynx. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.

I attempted to reproduce this issue using Ubuntu Lucid installed from the beta1 image dated 2010-03-17.1. I am not able to reproduce this in Ubuntu.

I have added exaile under affects, since it also opens maximized and must be resized manually to a window smaller than the desktop if it is closed while maximized.
