Bug Description

Binary package hint: metacity

This was working in Edgy Eft, and earlier herds of Fiesty.

If you change the button layout setting in gconf-editor >Apps > Metacity > General > button_layout this setting is ignored.

I filed a bug regarding compiz ignoring this setting (#89488), this has now been fixed but I cannot test as Metacity is also ignoring it too now.

Thanks for your bug report. Can you add the output of gconftool-2 -g /apps/metacity/general/button_layout ?

$ gconftool-2 -g /apps/metacity/general/button_layout
menu:minimize,maximize,close

Interesting as gconf-editor >Apps > Metacity > General > button_layout shows
close,maximize,minimize:menu

BTW setting using the command gconftool-2 works

 gconftool-2 -s /apps/metacity/general/button_layout -t String close,maximize,minimize:menu

So the gconfeditor setting is being ignored.

Extra info...

I just tested the Compiz fix that is supposed to use these settings, since changing with gconftool-2 there are no window top icons at all with compiz running.

With latest updates to Feisty the window top is back and compiz is working correctly now.

Good point, I forgot the actualy reported bug.

I need to see if gconf-editor >Apps > Metacity > General > button_layout this setting is still being ignored.

Will check later and post back here, I forgot I changed with gconftool-2.

Sorry this bug is NOT fixed, just downloaded all the Feisty updates again (15 April) and changing the button layout in gconf-editor is STILL ignored.

I can only change using gconftool-2, the gconf-editor setting is saved when I go back in, but does not affect anything.

This is **still** not fixed with 7.04 final...

Just did a clean install and now the workaround using gconftool-2 does not work either...

Setting is stored but has no effect

No need to use style emphasys on "still", there is thousand of desktop bugs opens and the team working on them is small, the work has to be prioritize and that bug is not a high importance one. You are welcome to try fixing it or talk with upstream about it if you want to get something happening on it

Neil: Do note that this is a bug against Metacity. Whether Compiz understands the settings is a matter for Compiz, and you should probably have a separate bug for that.
