I have also installed HIDPoint ( www.hidpoint.com ) ... but it is not related to missing icon. Just to inform you, if it would matter.
This issue has been valid from first day of Karmic ...

Also, It would be too much to ask for backported Sound Preferences with "Test Speakers" button in "Hardware" tab like Maverick has!?
