Bug Description

Binary package hint: synaptic

I was trying to remove packages that I do not use, and I discovered that removing the package 'cheese' will automatically remove 'gnome' and 'gnome-desktop-environment'. Since cheese is a webcam interface program, and not likely required by the desktop environment, this seems like a spurious or incorrect dependency.

Release: 9.04

'cheese' package version: 2.26.0-0ubuntu1

Expected behavior: Expect to be able to remove 'cheese' without removing 'gnome' or 'gnome-desktop-environment'

Experienced behavior: Unable to remove 'cheese' without removing 'gnome' and 'gnome-desktop-environment'

ProblemType: Bug
Architecture: i386
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 9.04
ExecutablePath: /usr/sbin/synaptic
Package: synaptic 0.62.5ubuntu2.1
ProcAttrCurrent: unconfined
ProcEnviron:
 PATH=(custom, no user)
 LANG=en_US.UTF-8
 SHELL=/bin/bash
SourcePackage: synaptic
Uname: Linux 2.6.28-11-generic i686

Similarly to the issues raise in bug #372385 I have found out gnome desktop environment (version 2.26.1) is a dependency when removing epiphany-browser-data, epiphany-extensions, epiphany-gecko, cups-client via synaptic manager version 0.62.5.

Furthermore if you try to remove libcups2 package, the following packages are classed as dependency adobe-flashplugin, alacarte, apport-gtk, at-spi, bluez-gnome, brasero, compiz,dasher, deskbar-applet,desktop-base,ekiga, empathy,eog,epiphany -extensions, epiphany-gecko, evince, evolution, firefox 3.0,foomatic-db-engine, gcalctool, gconf-editior,ddebi, gdm, gedit, ghostscript,gimp,gksu, gnome, gnome-core, gnome-desktop-enviroment, tomboy,synapic and many more lib packages.

As you can see from the large list of depenacies this is quite a big problem.

I hope this information is usefully. Keep up the good work.

gnome-desktop is a Debian metapackage to conveniently install a complete working GNOME desktop. It is not installed by default in Ubuntu as ubuntu-desktop is Ubuntu's metapackage to install a complete Ubuntu desktop. Therefore, you can safely remove gnome-desktop. If you have questions or concerns about the package selection in gnome-desktop, please report them to Debian. Some basic information about how to do that can be found at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Debian/Bugs or http://www.debian.org/Bugs/Reporting
