Bug Description

gnome-desktop-environment is not installable, because it has a dependency on gnome-keyring-manager, which does not exist.

Original description:

The package gnome-desktop-manager is broken (after dist-upgrade to Hardy from Gutsy)

sudo apt-get install gnome-desktop-environment
Paketlisten werden gelesen... Fertig
Abhängigkeitsbaum wird aufgebaut
Reading state information... Fertig

Her GDM is starting in the save-mode. As gnome-desktop-environment is depending on gnome-keyring-manager, she asks whether that might have to do with my issue.

(Although I doubt that, I just think, it is/was a packaging issue, because it just wants gnome-keyring-manager >= 2.20.0, which cannot be installed ... ?!)

Problem seems to be due to the disappearance of the gnome-keyring-manager package which the gnome-desktop-environment package depends on. See https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/hardy/i386/gnome-keyring-manager and you'll see in the left hand pane that:

"There is no current release for this package in Ubuntu hardy (i386)"

In fact, the Hardy package doesn't exist for any of the architectures.

I also have the same problem.

I cannot reinstall my broken gnome because the package "gnome-keyring-manager" deb file lack from the lepository,
only shows on the list (with 1 byte size)

When I try to install "gnome-desktop-environment" synaptic halts of this error:
"gnome-desktop-environment:
Függ ettől: gnome-keyring-manager (>=2.20.0) but it is not installable" (depends)

When I try to install "gnome":
"gnome:
Függ ettől: gnome-desktop-environment, de az nincs telepítésre megjelölve" (depends, but not marked to install)

I have (had) the same problem when installing Gnome on Kubuntu. Apparently gnome-keyring-manager was pulled out of the hardy-dev-repository on 2008-02-09 (https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/hardy/i386/gnome-keyring-manager/).

I worked around it by downloading the archived .deb from there and installing it with "dpkg -i". Then gnome installed without problems.

After startup it had no window manager, but that was probably unrelated (missing compiz and/or theme, bug 194022).

This is still broken in May.

If gnome-desktop-environment is not the correct meta-package to use, which package/task etc can be used to install the gnome environment?

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
gnome-desktop-environment: Depends: gnome-keyring-manager (>= 2.20.0) but it is not installable
E: Broken packages

As a possible workaround I used tasksel to install the 'Ubuntu desktop' task, this does not seem to depend on gnome-keyring-manager.

I haven't rebooted yet to see if the complete Ubuntu Gnome environment is present.

Stephen Donnelly's right. Had the same problem, found this page, and tasksel allowed me to install Gnome when I chose to install Ubuntu Desktop.

I've been using apt-get install several times, right down to attempting installing the gnome-keyring-manager package (which can't be installed). Tried aptitude as well, but I was doing that blindly. The solution was here all along - tasksel.

Suggestion for next update: get apt-get to recommend using tasksel if possible...

Thanks, Stephen!!!!

I have had the same problem, but when installing with dpkg -i the gnome-keyring-manager the system asked for launchpad-integration0, and I had launchpad-integration1. I installed also launchpad-integration0. Now the system is installing gnome, hope it wil run
