Bug Description

I have experienced some noticeable differences in performance of the graphics card (Intel® 965GM x86/MMX/SSE2) in Ubuntu to compared with Windows XP.

In Smokin Guns Game, in lowest graphics, could not more than 60 FPS.

In Windows XP, with maximum definition, played games requiring graphics capabilities, such as evalution Pro Soccer 2008 and 2009, FIFA Street, Counter Strike Source, Prince of Persia and GTA San Andreas, and the computer didn't lose performance.

In Ubuntu, the simple game, Smokin Guns ( http://forum.smokin-guns.org/ ), play just 40/60 FPS in lower graphics... In higher quality, some 10/20 FPS.

André Lopes, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read "How to report bugs effectively" http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

it's not a bug in the game.

With the same resolution, some computers have a correct behavior.

In some games, for example Smokin Guns for linux, and other games through wine, for example Fifa 99, it appears two black borders (on the left and right side)

The images of the games are something of this kind: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/179/snapshot20100420155909.jpg/sr=1

This only happens in Ubuntu. In Windows XP and Windows Vista that never happened.

just for your info.

I can reprodue this issue on 12.04. even compiz is slow in some situations, the same for the game which is mentioned here.

on 12.10 i can not reproduce this issue. On that release the performance is fine related to the vga.

RE: graphics card (Intel® 965GM x86/MMX/SSE2) in Ubuntu

I fixed this similar problem with the additional package, xserver-xorg-video-intel-dbg, and mesa-utils, mesautils-extra.

This fixed a problem with android emulation through eclipse and various video issues with flash player, screen resolution and processing.

hope this helps a bit and let us know how you get on...

oh what machine are you using? have you checked the bios settings for esoteric memory handeling too?

André Lopes, as per http://www.toshiba.co.uk/innovation/download_bios.jsp?service=UK an update to your computer's buggy, insecure, and outdated BIOS is available (5.60). If you update to this following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BIOSUpdate does it change anything?

For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette .

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful.

Also, you don't have to create a new bug report.

Once the BIOS is updated, if the problem is still reproducible:
1) Please provide the output of the following terminal command (not perform an apport-collect):
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date
2) Please make a comment specifically advising on if there was an improvement or not.
3) Please mark this report Status New.

If it's not reproducible, please mark this as Invalid.

Thank you for your understanding.
