Bug Description

Using xserver-xorg-video-intel 2.8.1 and kernel 2.6.31-8 from karmic

Upgraded to mesa 7.6 from mesa 7.5 in karmic. greeter is displayed correctly, but after login the screen is black with a moveable cursor. The cursor changes depending on the screen location, meaning that it is aware of the program windows that should be being drawn underneath it. Also, when Ctrl-Alt-Backspace is hit, the normal desktop can be seen briefly flashing onto the screen before returning to the console. Disabling DRI or reverting to mesa 7.5 makes it all work again.

Hi nemesis-icequake,

Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn`, and attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log (and maybe Xorg.0.log.old) file from after reproducing this issue. If you've made any customizations to your /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.

Hi Bryce, I also ran into this behavior yesterday after an upgrade and reboot. Possible duplicate of bug 385539. I can file a new report if you would prefer.

Using default xorg.conf (which apparently is no xorg.conf now). Thanks!

Hi Connor, thanks yes file a new bug. Blank screen issues are pretty generic so what you're seeing may be different from Ryan's

After a reboot, the problem seems not to happen anymore. Perhaps mesa-7.5 leaves the hardware in a strange state.

And it just occurred again either due to a logout / log back in, or a VT switch.

Can you please try the mesa package from https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-updates/ ?

Hi,

I have the same problem since alpha5.
Getting a blank sceen after login (login ui is fine). I can see and move cursor and get to cmd and issue 'metacity --replace' which brings back the screen.
so perhaps problem is with compiz. same happens when deleting xorg completely though.
I tried Tormod Volden MESA package and i get to log in and see desktop and all seem well. but than i tried activating desktop effects and it happened again.

Hi. I followed a suggestion in ubuntuforum to disable echo NO_NEW_FAIR_SLEEPERS, due to system speed issue, after doing so and rebooting, all the sudden i got everything fixed. speed is A OK, desktop effects are back and no blank screen issue! I did nothing else that might have fix that so my best guess is that it is related some how. please check and confirm. anyway it seem to have done the trick for me.
cheers

ok, i can 100% confirm. after enabling NEW_FAIR_SLEEPERS system is slow, and getting blank screen again after login when desktop effects are enabled.
disabling NEW_FAIR_SLEEPERS fix the issue!

Same here with a radeon Mobility FireGL 9000 (RV250). Latest xorg-edgers and NEW_FAIR_SLEEPERS as suggested above did not help.

See https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=24074. The problem disappear when downgrading libgl1-mesa-dri to 7.5 or 7.4, so it really seems to be mesa related. Anything I tried in 7.6 and 7.7 branches was horribly slow and buggy for me.
