Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: ATI Technologies Inc RV410 [Radeon X700] [1002:5e4f] (prog-if 00 [VGA])
Subsystem: PC Partner Limited Unknown device [174b:0670]
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 16
        Memory at e0000000 (64-bit, prefetchable) [size=256M]
        Memory at f1000000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=64K]
        I/O ports at a000 [size=256]
[virtual] Expansion ROM at f0000000 [disabled] [size=128K]
        Capabilities: <access denied>

Fails to init X with compiz enabled, requires sometimes X restart to show menu. Problematic with usplash on 64 bit too as no splash is shown. Real name should be: X700 SE but PCIID is the only thing needed to identify it.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Please attach your X server configuration file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf) and X server log file (/var/log/Xorg.0.log) to the bug report as individual uncompressed file attachments using the "Attachment:" box below. Could you please also try to run without any /etc/X11/xorg.conf and let Xorg autodetect your display and video card? Please also attach the /var/log/Xorg.0.log from this attempt. Thanks in advance.

Log with xorg.conf

Log without xorg.conf (does not matter, compiz would still not work). However with the Debian etch version of the driver it was possible to use beryl when radeon xserver was used - ati driver crashed. Here ati or radeon does not matter at all.

Other than compiz, does 3D applications such as glxgears work?

It seems all 3d apps have that problem, even glxgears, see picture.

Thanks for tracking down the patch. Do you have an upstream reference for it (git commit etc)?

we'll track debian, the current version in hardy is already based on the stable branch which will become 7.0.3. Should be in hardy before alpha4.
