Mark Jonas, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. As per your :

As well, as per http://h20565.www2.hp.com/portal/site/hpsc/template.PAGE/public/psi/swdHome/?sp4ts.oid=3459243&spf_p.tpst=swdMain&spf_p.prp_swdMain=wsrp-navigationalState%3DswEnvOID%253D4060%257CswLang%253D%257Caction%253DlistDriver&javax.portlet.begCacheTok=com.vignette.cachetoken&javax.portlet.endCacheTok=com.vignette.cachetoken#BIOS an update is available for your BIOS (1.32). If you update to this following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BiosUpdate , does it change anything? If it doesn't, could you please both specify what happened, and just provide the output of the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful.

For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette .

Thank you for your understanding.

X is fine. It is OpenGL that is slow. Solution stop using an OpenGL compositor that triggers software fallbacks in its most frequent operations. Compare with xfce4 for example.

Chris, your proposal is not a solution but a workaround. Alternative workarounds are to use an old version of Ubuntu or Windows 7 which shows good performance on its 3D enhanced desktop.

I am still interested in a solution regarding this regression that the Unity desktop does not perform any more.

penalvch, please STOP suggesting people to update their bios. It doesn't help.

Maarten Lankhorst, if you are saying a BIOS update wouldn't help address a verified software bug (ex. bug in the xorg stack), this would go without saying. However, as well known and documented on Launchpad, BIOS bugs can cause various problems, including graphics ones. So, your prior statement would be misleading.

The used Ubuntu version is no longer supported, and updates were released in Ubuntu 14.04 (mesa 10.1.3 vs. 10.0.1 per the report), can you check if the problem is still reproducible with the updated mesa or on a newer Ubuntu?
