Bug Description

Often users ask why their graphics card is not listed in Details -> Graphics, so this will be solved if mesa-utils would be shipped by default.

I know you can't ship everything, but it would solve the problems that often people don't know why there simply stands "Unknown" in the Graphics sections.

You did not mention where you were finding the "Details -> Graphics" links, but I'm gathering it was Gnome Shell, which is a universe package. However, we ship Unity rather than Gnome Shell as the default environment, Unity does not require anything from mesa-utils currently. So moving mesa-utils into main and installing it by default is inappropriate, as it would unnecessarily bloat the install image size.

Instead, if mesa-utils is required by Gnome Shell, it should be listed as a Recommends in the gnome-shell packaging.

Changed in mesa-demos (Ubuntu):
status: Confirmed → Won't Fix

In other words I think gnome-shell need something such as the attached patch.

Actually I think this is referring to the Details tab in gnome-control-center. In which case its not really specific to gnome-shell since the same issue will occur with Unity

Yes, the problem is that gnome-control-center currently needs mesa-demos for the Details panel to work correctly. Either we need to fix gnome-control-center to not need that or we should just ship the fairly small binary package.

I'm marking this a duplicate of bug 914631 where this was originally reported.

In Unity at least in raring there is "About this computer" and then I see the information and without mesa-utils installed it won't show the graphic details.
