This one can be closed, I found out what happened.
When I installed autoconf and automake I got the above
error message. After looking into it I found out that the
program 'install-info' was not run from '/usr/sbin'
but from '/usr/local/texlive/2008/bin/i386-linux/'
which was in my PATH before '/usr/sbin.'
After tweaking the PATH all works well.

Hint: Give the full path in the pre and post install scripts.
