Got this while upgrading from a perfectly working Jaunty install (in-place, update-manager -d) to Karmic Beta

same as Brent, on almost fresh install of 9.04 from alternate CD plus
LVM on %00G hd
update manager recomendations as of 2009-10-08
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
apt-get install -y ssh terminator keepassX subversion synergy quicksynergy vlc fdupes
addintiona gstreamer plugins selecetd from menu
apt-get install inkscape dia bootchart dstat ssh openssh-server sshfs xnest gedit-plugins filezilla ddclient wine most ia32-libs lib32asound2 util-linux curl
apt-get install apache2 apache2-doc apache2-suexec

And what migth be more relevant box ALREADY with GRUB2 !
