Bug Description

It looks like mdbtools-gmdb is keeping several obsolete packages in main such as gconf, gnome-vfs, libbonobo, libbonoboui, libgnome, libgnomecanvas, and libgnomeui.

Perhaps mdbtools could be demoted entirely to universe. It's listed in the platform.zesty seed in supported-misc-servers, Database section. Its only reverse dependency in main is an alternate Suggests from libreoffice-base-drivers.

Please at least demote mdbtools-gmdb to universe.

Wearing my ~ubuntu-server hat, I didn't understand why we were seeding this, so I did some archaeology.

It looks like it was originally seeded in http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-core-dev/ubuntu-seeds/platform.zesty/revision/400 for desktop purposes into the generic "supported" seed, and then moved during a restructure in http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-core-dev/ubuntu-seeds/platform.zesty/revision/1171 to the supported-misc-servers seed where it currently resides. I think this was done in error and should have been moved to a desktop seed.

But desktop don't have it installed by default. It's also far less relevant nowadays so it probably does make sense to drop it, but I don't want to pre-empt ~ubuntu-desktop in making that decision.

Note that mdbtools-gmdb is also seeded in supported-sysadmin-desktop. Presumably both can be dropped.

So no objection from ~ubuntu-server.

Dustin, subscribing you FYI, but given that we were seeding this in error, I presume it's fine from a ~canonical-server perspective.

16:09 <jbicha> rbasak: hi, I'm pinging again about LP: #1667195, Sweet5hark is out this week but I believe he was fine with it

16:12 <rbasak> jbicha: thanks. OK, I'll drop it from the server seed.

16:13 * rbasak wonders if that needs an FFe.

16:15 <jbicha> my opinion is that since it wasn't shipped but only listed as "supported" that it wouldn't need a FFe

16:15 <rbasak> Good point. It wouldn't make any changes to an image.

16:20 <rbasak> Can someone ack dropping mdbtools-gmdb from supported-sysadmin-desktop please? I'm happy to make the change, just want to make sure the desktop team are fine with it.

16:22 <jbicha> too bad Sweet5hark is out today, but he seemed ok with it the last time I asked: https://irclogs.ubuntu.com/2017/03/07/%23ubuntu-desktop.html#t16:04

16:23 <jbicha> seb128: do you want to make the decision on that? ^

16:26 <seb128> he's out this week

16:27 <seb128> rbasak, jbicha, it doesn't have any impact on images right? (seems a bit late in the cycle for that) But since Bjoern seemed ok about it feel free to do it (or drop him an email just to confirm, he might only reply next week though)

16:27 <rbasak> Yeah, it shouldn't affect images AFAIK.

16:28 <rbasak> supported-misc-servers and supported-sysadmin-desktop are the only seeds affected, and AIUI they aren't involved in image generation.

16:28 <rbasak> I'll go ahead and drop it and update the bug. Sweet5hark is subscribed so will see the update. Thank you for looking.
