On looking at this further, I seem to only have that problem with a drive-level RAID. A partition-level RAID will still inform the system that the member partitions are not available for use.

Of course, automatic assembly still fails if the array isn't specified in initrd's mdadm.conf. Sami's workaround didn't help that, either.
