I have the identical problem using:

$fakeroot -fakechroot debootstrap --variant=fakechroot noble $PWD/noble

Any progress?

I can work around the mawk failure with --exclude=mawk (I add --include=gawk), but then I'm hit with Bug #2065679

I suspect this is caused by fakeroot. Will update.

Definitely not mawk related. I have other programs (e.g. tar) failing under fakeroot/fakechroot as well.
