Bug Description

mate-screensaver won't start when using Marco + Compton.
The screen fades to black, then comes right back on.

Everything works fine with other Marco settings and Compiz.

Description: Ubuntu 16.04 LTS
Release: 16.04
MATE 1.14.1

I have the very same symptoms, but the MATE version differs. I instaled Ubuntu MATE 16.04 LTS a couple of days ago, and both the About MATE window and Synaptic reports the MATE version to be 1.12.1

This bug also may interfere with power management logic (mate-power-management).
I set the session idle timeout to 1 minute (+blank screen instead a screensaver), display sleep timeout to 1 minute and computer sleep timeout to 10 minutes. (Note: I'm using a desktop machine, so battery events / power source states do not interfere.)
Using Marco+Compton, the fade+reawaken glitch described above can be seen after 1:00. Then after 2:00 and 11:00 minutes, nothing happens.
Using Compiz, the blank screen kicks in at 1:00, then the screen sleep at 2:00, then the computer sleep at 11:00, just as it should in the other case.

Looks like I found the upstream bug report on GitHub:

https://github.com/mate-desktop/mate-screensaver/issues/92

(Couldn't link it into this ticket though, Launchpad does not recognize it somehow...)

Also the Ubuntu MATE Community Forum has a thread on this topic, too:

I'm also affected by this bug using Ubuntu MATE 16.04 LTS + MATE 1.12.1 and Marco + Compton. With Compiz, screensaver works fine.

Well somehow the bug does also occur with Compiz today for me.

However, whichever window manager is used, setting the screen to turn off via Power Management settings works for me, provided the screen saver is either disabled, or set to a different timing than the screen shutdown in Power Management settings.

Can you test this on the Ubuntu MATE 17.04 live image please. I can't reproduce this.

Just tested this on a full 17.04 installation on bare metal, using the same PM and screensaver settings that are showing the bug in 16.04.

Was not able to reproduce: the screen fades to black and correctly locks.

However, the "floating mate" screensaver is not starting for some reason.

Interesting: using a different compton configuration the bug does not happen.
Can someone test this?

pkill -x compton
