It means "ceased functioning", like, no longer running. :-)

FYI: This is only about Ubuntu-MATE 20.04. Ubuntu-MATE 22.04 LTS does not have this bug.

Besides that, I can not get you any further information since I upgraded to 22.04 some time ago.
This because 20.04 went out of support since april 2023.

I still do have a 20.04 ISO but I have no spare computer left to install 20.04 again to assist in squashing this bug, sorry.
