Alsa mixer no longer seems to be installed which i used to use for adjusting settings too. Booting from previous kernal in grub recognizes Asus Xonar sound card and usb camera. Built in sound previously broken hence the need to install sound card. PC is Lenovo S30 Thinkstation

re-installed kernal but mate-media package still does not recognize sound card Asus Xoner found by lspci at 03:00.0 Multimedia audio controller: C-Media Electronics Inc CMI8788 [Oxygen HD Audio]
used: sudo apt-get install --reinstall linux-image-generic linux-image-5.8.0-36-generic
and rebooted
