Bug Description

Currently Ubuntu 14.04 has old MATE-Desktop environment 1.6 release, which contains important bugs and depends on some mate-only libraries, like mate-doc-utils, libmatekeyring, libmatewnck, etc.

Please sync MATE 1.8 packages from Debian testing or unstable - lots of bugs fixed, replaced mate-only libraries with GNOME analogs, fixed a lot of code deprecations, updated translations, etc.
I think there should be no problems with syncing mate 1.8 packages from Debian, because MATE Desktop Environment wasn't included into previous Ubuntu releases.

The main changes in MATE 1.8 are (see http://mate-desktop.org/blog/2014-03-04-mate-1-8-released/ ):

Panel
Added support for Metacity keybindings in the run dialog and main menu
Added a progress bar to the logout dialog

Control center
Added support to use Metacity as a window manager

MATE Desktop library
    Added MATE User Guide
    Added mpaste tool for http://paste.mate-desktop.org

Applets
Added undo functionality to the sticky note applet
Added a new “command” applet to show the output of a command
Rewrote the “timer” applet in C
Clicking the middle mouse on the volume applet toggles mute

Dropped packages
    Replaced mate-doc-utils with yelp-tools
Replaced libmatekeyring and mate-keyring with libsecret and gnome-keyring
    Replaced libmatewnck with libwnck
    Replaced mucharmap with gucharmap
    Replaced mate-bluetooth with blueman
Merged all Caja extensions into a single package
Removed the modem lights applet, as the netspeed applet provides similar functionality

Caja (file manager)
Added an option to use IEC units instead of SI units
Added “Open parent location” option in the search view context menu

Marco (window manager)
    Added side-by-side tiling (window snapping)

Other improvements
Fixed a lot of code deprecations
    Fixed a lot of bugs
    Improved the build system
Added and improved a lot of translations

Do you have someone with upload rights lined up to do this work? Are all the packages ready to go? Can you please give a complete list of the packages affected and the actions (sync, merge, whatever) that they'll need? Finally, given that this is so close to release, are you confident that this is going to be of better quality than what we have quality (how thoroughly have you tested this and how will you deal with any bugs?)?

Yes, all packages are in Debian/testing

> Can you please give a complete list of the packages affected and the actions (sync, merge, whatever) that they'll need?

All packages are marked as affected, here is the list sorted by build order (because some have build-deps on others, mostly on mate-common):

mate-common
mate-menus
mate-desktop
libmatekbd
mate-polkit
libmateweather
mate-backgrounds
mate-dialogs
mate-icon-theme
mate-notification-daemon
mate-settings-daemon
mate-system-monitor
mate-themes

I don't have upload rights in Ubuntu :(

Trusty has already been released, so I'm marking all of these as Invalid (unfortunately). All MATE packages will be automatically synced into Utopic shortly if there is no Ubuntu delta, but please file individual sync request bugs (with requestsync) for any MATE packages with a delta in Ubuntu that no longer need it.
