The terminal log shows that mysqld failed to start/stop:

   invoke-rc.d: initscript mysql, action "stop" failed

Please provide more information about why the daemon does not start or stop. What did 'ps uax' show, was there a mysqld process? Is there anything in syslog from mysql or something in /var/log/mysql/error.log?
